Addiction is a complicated brain disorder for which there is no single solution for recovery. It impairs the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that includes regions involved in analysis, decision making and self-control. A person with substance use disorder might say, “I don’t want to take that drug,” but they don’t have the capacity to easily change their behavior.

Once a person is addicted, the fight to stay sober never ends. That is because addictive substances alter the brain’s pleasure circuits and help to engrave the experience of a drug’s high deep into the brain. Memories of the high become so enduring that years later they can be reawakened.
