NAVIGATING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

How to Advocate for Your Loved One in the Criminal Justice System

Truth Pharm has suggestions that can be used for various situations, but we focus here primarily on those arrested for crimes related to addiction and substance use.

Different families will want to take different approaches depending on the situation. Some families hope their loved one will be held in jail for a certain period of time or that they can persuade a judge to mandate treatment over incarceration. While there are some success stories in these regards, and we do understand some families are desperate for any solution or assistance in creating a pause in their loved one’s reckless lifestyle, we feel we must also state, as an organization, we typically do not advocate for incarceration due to the other increased risk factors that go along with incarceration and a criminal record. However, you have to do what you feel is best for your family and considering the situation. Only you know that. Also, how you respond to the current circumstances may vary based on the number of times the situation has arisen.

We do not address the drug court option here, but that is an option to explore. Our suggestion is to solicit input from others in terms of the drug court system in your area. Some are outstanding, some complicate things greatly and can even seem to “set someone up for failure.” Ask around about yours, get several opinions, before proceeding.
