Reversing an Opioid Overdose
Naloxone is used to reverse an opioid overdose. It can be administered either by intramuscular injection or as a nasal spray. It works by blocking the opioid receptor sites, thus reversing the toxic effect of the opioid.

As shown in the diagram, if naloxone is introduced to an opioid-bound receptor, it will kick the opioid out of the receptor because it has a higher affinity for the receptor. It does not stimulate the receptor because it does not sit in the activation zone, therefore, it is considered to be an opioid antagonist.
